Gray iron castings are also referred to as gray cast iron, grey iron castings, it is named after the gray color of the fracture surface. Gray iron has a low tensile strength due to the flake graphite in its microstructure, so it is used for shell components where the stiffness is more important than its tensile strength, and gray iron is extraordinarily good for applications in which vibration damping is required, such as bases and frames for industry equipments.
